As you can see from the screenshot, having multiple tabs open of the same category of item quickly becomes unmanageable from a ui perspective. If you gave each tab a unique name it would be much better.

What exactly should that be? I honestly have no idea an easy way to do it. Maybe the search terms used? Maybe the first word of the shabad? Ang #? Just give the tabs numbers? Any way you decide, as long as it's unique would be an improvement.

Originally we incremented the tab names prefixed with the origin data source, hovever decided to leave the datasource as the tab desc based on user feedback.

We could possibily make them configurable, but is it really worth it?

I wouldn't make it configurable, but I still insist having them numbered, or somehow named uniquely would be a positive change. I often use my phone for on-the-fly research in gurbani/etc and have many many tabs and application open. The ability to quickly to go a desired tab is definetly a plus.
